Therapy
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a rehabilitation healthcare profession, alongside others like physiotherapy and speech therapy. The name of our profession can be confusing because “occupation-al” implies we only have something to do with work or vocation! Actually, the reference is to all the meaningful activities which occupy the daily lives of human beings and which give us the sense of meaning and purpose we need to thrive. So, OT’s work with people of all ages with various health challenges to help them live better and do the daily activities they want and need to do – from self-care to work/study, socializing and leisure.
As an OT, I can assess every aspect of your health and life. I then train and support you in using all the evidence-backed, non-medication strategies that can become your daily habits for managing pain long-term. These are always personalised to suit your unique needs and preferences.
Individual OT online (for SA residents only)
- An initial 1.5 to 2 hour comprehensive assessment of the physical, psychological, social/environmental and functional aspects relating to your condition. This information is gathered through an online interview and your completion of relevant online assessments.
- A 1-hour feedback and planning session during which we will discuss and agree on a personalised therapy plan. This plan usually outlines the nature of the therapy (e.g. activities, processes, techniques) and the number of sessions likely to be needed. This therapy plan is flexible and subject to change as necessary.
- Individual therapy sessions of 30-60 mins that may initially take place weekly and then be scheduled every 2 weeks or monthly as you make progress.
- In addition to OT, recommendations may be made regarding referral to other healthcare practitioners.
-
- Sometimes it can be helpful to hold a session with your partner/ family/ employer or other significant others. This is usually an education-focussed session to help others in your life understand your experience and facilitate appropriate support from them. (NB: Family or couples therapy is not within the scope of my practice.)
